How the counts work
Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, so hyphenated-words count as one and multiple spaces don't inflate the count. Sentences are estimated by splitting on . ! ?, which works well for standard prose but can undercount text full of abbreviations. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, the commonly cited average for adult silent reading of straightforward text — technical or dense material will typically take longer.
