Hash Generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 hashes using the Web Crypto API.

Hashed with the browser's native crypto.subtle API. Nothing here is ever sent to a server.

Why no MD5

MD5 and this tool's algorithms all serve the same basic purpose — turning input into a fixed-length fingerprint — but MD5 is cryptographically broken: it's practical to construct two different inputs that produce the same hash, which defeats its use for anything security-sensitive. Browsers deliberately don't implement it in the Web Crypto API for that reason. SHA-256 is the standard modern choice for checksums, data integrity checks, and cryptographic use; SHA-1 is included here for compatibility with older systems but shouldn't be used for anything requiring collision resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 is the standard general-purpose choice today — widely supported, fast, and not known to be broken. SHA-1 is included for compatibility with legacy systems but is cryptographically broken and shouldn't be used for security purposes.

Can a hash be reversed back to the original text?

No — cryptographic hashes are one-way functions by design. The same input always produces the same hash, which is useful for verifying data integrity, but you can't recover the original input from the hash alone.
