What makes a good URL slug
A slug should be lowercase, hyphen-separated, and free of anything a browser or search engine would need to percent-encode — spaces, punctuation, and accented characters all get normalized away. Accented Latin letters are converted to their plain equivalent (é becomes e) rather than dropped, but characters with no Latin equivalent, like CJK or Arabic script, don't survive the conversion — for non-Latin content, a transliteration or a manually chosen slug usually reads better than the automated fallback.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a string 'URL-safe'?
Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only — spaces become hyphens, accented characters are typically normalized to their plain equivalent, and punctuation and special characters are stripped, since those can cause issues or ambiguity in a URL.
