Paint Calculator
How much paint you need for a wall, based on area, coats, and coverage rate.
Every calculation runs locally in your browser. Coverage rate varies by paint type and surface texture — check the number printed on your specific can for the most accurate result.

Why coats multiply, not add
Each coat covers the same net area, so paint needed scales directly with the number of coats — two coats on a 36 m² wall uses exactly twice the paint of one coat, not some smaller "second coat is thinner" adjustment. Coverage rate is the biggest variable in this whole calculation: a rough or porous surface (bare drywall, textured plaster) can soak up noticeably more paint per square meter than a smooth, already-painted wall, which is why it's worth checking the coverage figure on your actual can rather than trusting a generic default.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this ask for the number of coats?
Most paint jobs need two coats for even, opaque coverage, especially over a different existing color — a single-coat estimate would leave you short by roughly half if the wall actually needs two.
Should I subtract doors and windows from the area?
For a small room with standard doors and windows, most painters skip subtracting them since the margin is already absorbed by the waste allowance. For a wall with a large window or sliding door, subtracting its area gives a tighter estimate.
