Number Base Converter

Convert a number between binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal at once.

Every conversion runs locally in your browser. Nothing you enter here is sent to a server.

Why hex and binary matter to developers

Binary maps directly onto how hardware stores bits, and hexadecimal is a compact shorthand for it — each hex digit represents exactly 4 bits, so a byte is always exactly 2 hex digits (0x00 to 0xFF). That clean mapping is why hex shows up everywhere from color codes to memory addresses to debugger output, while decimal doesn't align to any power-of-two boundary at all. This converter uses arbitrary-precision integer math, so it stays exact even for values far beyond what a 64-bit number can hold.

Frequently asked questions

Why do programmers use hexadecimal instead of just decimal?

Hex maps cleanly onto binary — each hex digit represents exactly 4 bits — making it a compact, human-readable way to represent binary data like memory addresses, color codes, and byte values without long strings of 1s and 0s.
