Why proportional allocation is fairer than an even split
Splitting tax and tip evenly regardless of what each person ordered means the person who had a salad effectively subsidizes the person who ordered a steak and two cocktails. Allocating tax and tip in proportion to each person's own subtotal keeps that relationship intact — everyone pays the same percentage on top of their own order, which is what tax and tip are actually calculated on in the first place.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just split the bill evenly?
An even split overcharges people who ordered less and undercharges people who ordered more. This calculator allocates tax and tip proportionally to what each person actually ordered, so everyone pays their fair share.
How exactly is tax and tip allocated per person?
Each person's share of tax and tip is proportional to their share of the pre-tax subtotal — someone who ordered 30% of the total food cost pays 30% of the tax and tip, not an equal fraction.
What if someone only ordered a drink?
Enter their item at its actual price. Because allocation is proportional to what they ordered, a small item correctly gets a small proportional share of tax and tip rather than an even split.
