Two text encodings for the same bytes

Hex and Base64 both exist to represent arbitrary binary data as printable text, just at different densities. Hex uses 2 characters per byte (16 possible values per digit), while Base64 packs 3 bytes into 4 characters (64 possible values per digit) — about 33% more compact, which is why Base64 is the more common choice for embedding binary data in JSON, URLs, or emails, while hex remains popular for hashes, color codes, and anywhere byte-for-byte readability matters more than size.

Frequently asked questions

When would I need to convert between hex and Base64?

Common in cryptography and networking contexts — a hash or key is often generated as hex, but Base64 is more compact and common in contexts like JWTs, API tokens, or embedding binary data in text formats like JSON.
