Named vs. numeric entities

HTML entities exist to safely represent characters that would otherwise be interpreted as markup — < and & especially, since a raw < in text content risks being parsed as the start of a tag. Named entities like & are easier to read, while numeric entities like é (decimal) or ☃ (hex) can represent any Unicode code point, named or not — this decoder handles both forms.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to escape characters like < and & in HTML?

Because those characters have special meaning in HTML syntax — an unescaped < can be interpreted as the start of a tag — so displaying them literally as text requires encoding them as entities like < and & to avoid breaking the markup or creating an injection risk.
