HEX, RGB, and HSL at a glance
HEX and RGB describe the exact same color space (red, green, blue channels) — HEX is just RGB written in base-16 instead of base-10. HSL describes color differently: hue (the color itself, 0–360°), saturation (how vivid vs. gray), and lightness (how light vs. dark). HSL is often easier to reason about when designing a color scale, since you can shift lightness or saturation while keeping the hue constant — something that's much harder to do by eye in RGB or HEX.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I use HSL instead of HEX or RGB?
HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) separates a color's tone from its intensity and brightness, making it much easier to create consistent color variations — like a lighter or more muted version of the same hue — than adjusting HEX or RGB values directly.
