Flooring & Tile Calculator

How many tiles you need for a room, including a waste allowance.

Why waste is added to the area, not the tile count

Cut offcuts, breakage, and pattern-matching losses scale with how much floor you're covering, not with how many tiles that happens to divide into — so the waste allowance inflates the room's area first, then that larger area is divided by tile size. This tends to be more realistic than simply adding a flat number of extra tiles at the end, especially for larger rooms where the absolute waste is bigger even at the same percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this add extra tiles beyond the exact room area?

A waste allowance (commonly 10%) covers cuts around edges, corners, and doorways, plus breakage during installation — ordering the exact calculated area with no buffer very often leaves you short partway through the job.

Does tile pattern affect how much waste allowance I need?

Yes — a diagonal layout or a room with lots of alcoves and cuts generates more waste than a simple rectangular room with a straight layout, so consider bumping the waste percentage up for a complex layout.
