Reading the WCAG levels

WCAG AA is the baseline most sites target legally and practically: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (18pt+, or 14pt+ bold). AAA is a stricter enhanced standard — 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively — recommended for content aimed at users with low vision. A ratio below AA for normal text usually means the color pair needs more separation in lightness, not just a different hue.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between AA and AAA contrast levels?

WCAG AA requires a 4.5:1 ratio for normal text (3:1 for large text) and is the standard most sites target for legal accessibility compliance. AAA requires a stricter 7:1 (4.5:1 for large text) and is considered enhanced accessibility.

Does contrast ratio depend on font size?

Yes — WCAG defines 'large text' (18pt+, or 14pt+ bold) with a lower required ratio, since larger text is inherently easier to read at lower contrast than small body text.
