Why 300 DPI is the print-quality standard

DPI (dots per inch) describes pixel density, not image quality on its own — the same 3000×2000px image prints as a crisp 10×6.67 inch photo at 300 DPI, but a soft, visibly pixelated 20×13.3 inch poster at 150 DPI, because the same pixels get stretched across more physical space. 300 DPI is the conventional threshold for print work viewed up close (photos, magazines); large-format prints viewed from a distance — banners, billboards — can get away with far lower DPI since the eye can't resolve individual dots at that viewing distance anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What DPI should I use for a print job?

300 DPI is the standard for high-quality photo prints viewed up close. Large-format prints viewed from a distance (posters, banners) can use much lower DPI, like 100-150, since viewing distance reduces how much detail the eye actually resolves.
