Why base62 instead of base64

A standard UUID's 128 bits take 36 characters in the usual hex-with-dashes format. Base62 (digits plus upper- and lowercase letters) packs those same bits into roughly 22 characters — shorter than base64, because base64 needs 2 extra symbols (typically + and /) that aren't safe to use directly in a URL path without escaping. Base62 uses only alphanumeric characters, so the result drops straight into a URL with no encoding needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why shorten a UUID for a URL?

A standard UUID is 36 characters including hyphens. Re-encoding the same 128 bits in base62 (using letters and digits instead of hex) produces a much shorter string — useful for cleaner URLs while still round-tripping back to the exact original UUID.
