Mulch & Soil Calculator

How much mulch or soil you need for a garden bed, and how many bags to buy.

Every calculation runs locally in your browser. A depth of 5–7cm is a common recommendation for mulch; soil for raised beds often goes deeper.

Why a thin layer over a big bed adds up fast

A shallow depth sounds negligible per square meter, but volume is area times depth, so a large bed at even a modest 5cm covering can need hundreds of liters — a 10 m² bed at 5cm is already half a cubic meter, 500 liters, well beyond what a single bag covers. Bag sizes vary widely between mulch and soil products, which is why bag size is left as an input rather than a fixed assumption.

Frequently asked questions

What depth should I use for mulch versus soil?

A typical mulch layer is 2-3 inches deep for weed suppression without smothering plants. Soil amendment depth varies more by purpose — a few inches for topdressing versus a full bed depth for a new garden bed.
