Why spacing recommendations matter more than they seem
Spacing too tightly means plants compete for light, water, and nutrients, often producing a lower total yield than a properly-spaced bed would despite having more plants in it — overcrowded plants can also struggle with poor air circulation, which raises the risk of fungal disease. Spacing recommendations on seed packets already account for a plant's mature size, not its size at planting, which is why beds that look sparse on day one usually fill in exactly as expected by harvest time.
Frequently asked questions
Why does recommended spacing matter for how many plants fit?
Spacing that's too tight leads to competition for light, water, and nutrients as plants mature, even if seedlings look fine with room to spare at planting time — using the mature spacing recommendation avoids overcrowding down the line.
