Why brewing ratios use water, not coffee, as the base
A "1:15" ratio means 15 grams of water for every 1 gram of coffee — expressing it this way makes it easy to scale a recipe up or down for any batch size just by picking a target water amount. Lower ratios (more coffee per water, like 1:14) produce a stronger, more concentrated cup; higher ratios (1:17–1:18) produce a lighter one. Most specialty coffee guidance falls in the 1:15 to 1:17 range as a starting point, with personal taste and the specific brew method both nudging it in either direction.
Frequently asked questions
What's a standard coffee-to-water ratio?
The Specialty Coffee Association suggests a starting ratio around 1:16 to 1:18 (coffee to water by weight) for most brew methods — a lower ratio number means stronger coffee, since less water is used per gram of coffee.
