Why the bigger pack isn't automatically the better deal
Stores don't always price larger packs at a lower rate per unit — bulk sizes, private-label repackaging, and "sale" pricing on smaller sizes can all flip the usual assumption. Dividing price by quantity gives a true apples-to-apples number regardless of package size, which is exactly what unit-price labels on store shelves are required to show in many regions, just not always in a way that's easy to compare at a glance between two different aisles or brands.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the bigger package always the better deal?
Bulk packaging is usually cheaper per unit, but not always — sales, private-label pricing, and package-size marketing tricks can make a smaller package the better per-unit deal. Comparing unit price directly, rather than total price, is the only reliable way to tell.
