Every calculation runs locally in your browser. This is stacked volume — loosely thrown or "loose thrown" wood takes up more space per unit of actual wood than a neatly stacked pile.

Where the "cord" unit comes from
A cord is a standardized stacked-wood volume — traditionally a pile 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long, or any stack totaling that same 128 cubic feet (about 3.62 cubic meters). It became the standard unit because firewood is sold by volume rather than weight, and a consistent stack size made pricing comparable between sellers before anyone could reliably weigh a truckload of logs.
Frequently asked questions
What's a cord of firewood?
A standard measurement equal to a stack 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long — 128 cubic feet of stacked wood (which includes air gaps between logs, not solid wood volume) — the standard unit firewood is typically bought and sold by.
