Gravel Calculator

How much gravel — by weight — you need for a driveway or path.

Every calculation runs locally in your browser. Density varies by material — crushed stone, pea gravel, and river rock all pack differently; check with your supplier for the specific product's density.

Why gravel is sold by weight, not volume

Bulk gravel suppliers deliver and price by the tonne rather than by bag or cubic meter, since weight is far easier to measure accurately on a truck scale than loose volume — a pile's volume also changes depending on how tightly it's compacted. Converting the area and depth you need into a volume first, then multiplying by the material's density, gives the weight figure a supplier can actually quote and deliver against.

Frequently asked questions

Why is gravel sold by weight instead of volume?

Gravel density varies by material and size, so weight (which suppliers can measure precisely when loading a truck) is a more reliable ordering unit than volume — this calculator converts your area and depth into a weight estimate using typical gravel density.
