Why 40 hours is the standard threshold
Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees are generally entitled to overtime pay for any hours worked beyond 40 in a single week, at a rate of at least 1.5× their regular hourly rate — "time and a half." Some employers and union contracts pay double time (2×) for hours beyond a higher threshold, or for holidays, which is why the multiplier here is adjustable. State law can set a higher bar than federal law, so always check your specific state's rules if the numbers here seem off.
Frequently asked questions
What overtime rule does this calculator use?
The standard US federal rule: 1.5× your regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week. Some states and some employers use different or more generous thresholds — check your local labor law and employment agreement.
Does this apply to salaried employees?
Only if you're classified as non-exempt under US labor law — many salaried professional, administrative, and executive roles are exempt from overtime pay entirely, regardless of hours worked.
