Stacking two discounts isn't the same as adding their percentages
A 20% off sale followed by an extra 10% off coupon doesn't add up to 30% off — the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. $100 at 20% off is $80, and 10% off $80 is $8, for a final price of $72 — an effective discount of 28%, not 30%. To check a stacked discount, apply this calculator twice: once for each markdown, using the previous result as the next "original price."
Frequently asked questions
How do I stack two discounts, like 20% off plus an extra 10%?
Apply them sequentially, not by adding the percentages — 20% off then 10% off a $100 item gives $80, then $72, which is a 28% total discount, not 30%.
What's the difference between percent off and percent markup?
Percent off reduces from the original price (a discount). Percent markup increases from a cost basis to set a selling price — they use the same math but move in opposite directions and from different starting points.
