Why credit card debt is different from a loan
A mortgage or auto loan has a fixed term — the payment is calculated so the balance hits zero exactly on schedule. Credit card debt is revolving: there's no fixed payoff date built in, only a minimum payment that's often just slightly above the interest charge. Paying only the minimum on a high-APR balance can stretch payoff out for years and multiply the total interest paid — the fastest way to change that is increasing the fixed monthly payment, which is exactly what this calculator lets you test.
Frequently asked questions
Does this handle multiple debts at once?
This calculator models a single balance at a fixed payment. For strategy across several debts, use the Debt Avalanche vs. Snowball Calculator, which sequences multiple balances by interest rate or size.
Why does a small payment increase take years off the payoff time?
Because more of each payment goes to principal instead of interest, which compounds: a smaller balance next month accrues less interest, so the effect snowballs faster than the raw payment increase alone would suggest.
