Where the Devine formula comes from
Dr. B.J. Devine published this formula in 1974, originally to help estimate drug dosing based on body weight rather than as a fitness or aesthetic target. It starts from a base weight at 5 feet tall and adds a fixed amount per inch beyond that — simple, but height-only, so it says nothing about muscle mass, bone density, or frame size. A muscular athlete will typically weigh well above this number in perfect health. It's best used as one reference point, similar to BMI, not a number to chase directly.
Frequently asked questions
What's the Devine formula?
A formula originally developed in 1974 for medication dosing that estimates a reference body weight from height, with separate constants for men and women — it remains widely used in clinical settings for that original purpose.
Is "ideal body weight" actually the healthiest weight for me?
Not necessarily — it's a population-level reference formula, not personalized to your frame size, muscle mass, or health markers. A healthy weight range is better assessed alongside other factors like waist circumference and overall fitness.
