BMR vs. TDEE — what's the difference?

BMR is the energy your body needs just to stay alive — breathing, circulation, cell repair — assuming you spent the entire day lying still. It does not include any activity, digestion, or exercise, which is why it's always lower than your actual daily calorie burn. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely considered the most accurate BMR formula for the general population. To see your full daily calorie needs including activity level, check the TDEE calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What formula does this calculator use?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation — widely regarded by dietitians as more accurate for most modern populations than the older Harris-Benedict formula, though both estimate the same thing: calories burned at complete rest.

Why is BMR always lower than TDEE?

BMR is calories burned doing absolutely nothing — just keeping your body alive. TDEE adds every calorie burned through movement, exercise, and digestion on top of that baseline, so it's always the larger number.
